This painting is staged like the composition of Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. The five young girls are variations on Balthus’ teenagers, their hair styled after Fernand Leger, all tied together in a Verner Panton and Marimekko melon-colored pattern. The retro look recalls girlfriends gathering in the 70s and 80s. but the scene is timeless.  Young girls gather and explore friendship and rivalries as they hover on the precipe of womanhood.
